Can you trust the results?

While very powerful, the analysis from genetic testing is still in its infancy. Some companies make claims about their genetic testing results that are not backed up by strong scientific evidence. We can help you discover what genetic results you can trust, and what claims still require more research.

The cytochrome P450 gene products are responsible for metabolizing a large number of widely prescribed drugs. Clopidogrel (Plavix®) is metabolized by CYP2C19 to its active form. Individuals with poor-metabolizers of CYP2C19 will require alternative drug therapy due to inability to activate Clopidogrel (Plavix®), while those with ultra-extensive metabolizer phenotype will require a decreased dosage due to higher than normal rates of drug metabolism.

Frequently asked questions

A genetic test is a report that tells you very specific answers based on what’s coded in your DNA.

This depends on the type of test. Genetic tests have good accuracy in predicting how your body will metabolize a drug, if you have certain mutations that predispose you to cancer, if you’ve been infected by a virus or bacteria, or your ancestral roots.

To select the best genetic test for you, you should know what your end-goal of the test is.

There are many limitations to genetic testing, but a few of the big limitations are:

  1. How effective a prescription drug will be for you. Genetic tests can only PREDICT how well a drug will be for you.
  2. The ancestral prediction is only as good as the testing company’s database. The larger the company’s database, the better, more complete, and more accurate your results will be.
  3. DNA health screenings only PREDICT the risk of you developing a certain condition (i.e. cancer) later in life. They do not tell you whether you will or will not develop a certain condition.
