Liver Function Test

"Am I at risk for Liver Disease?!"

What you need to know

Know what you're getting before you buy

Liver health tests come as an assortment of multiple tests to measure the function of your liver.

Is it worth it?

Liver disease is one of those "silent" types of chronic conditions, because its symptoms are not apparent, and take a long time to show. If you're concerned about your liver health, a molecular snapshot will be useful to you.

Can you trust the results?

All of the tests we list here are CLIA and CAP certified, which are the strictest level of regulation for laboratory tests. Yes, you can trust the results.

set proper expectations

Once you've received your results, you should consult your healthcare provider if any of your results are outside of the normal range.

Choose the right test for you

Liver health tests come from many vendors, at wildly different prices, and include different analytes (molecular targets). We do the research for you and help you find the right test for your budget.

Pixel by LabCorp

Blood draw requiring a visit to a physical LabCorp location or partnering LabCorp laboratory. This test requires 12 hours of fasting before your blood draw.

Common biomarkers to assess liver function: Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Albumin, Bilirubin, Total Protein.

Quest Direct

Blood draw requiring a visit to a Quest Patient Services Center. This test DOES NOT require fasting.

This is a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel Test that tests for several Liver Health parameters (ALP, ALT, AST, Bilirubin).

Lets Get Checked

Blood draw from a finger prick kit, delivered to your home.

Common biomarkers to assess liver function: Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Albumin, Bilirubin, Total Protein, Globulin, Gamma GT.

Frequently asked questions

A laboratory test that measures several (often 6 or more) molecules in your body. The sum of these measurements can paint an accurate picture as to how well your liver is functioning.

These tests can tell you a great deal of useful information, such as: screening for liver infections (i.e. hepatitis), monitor the progression of a disease (i.e. alcoholic or viral hepatitis), measure the severity of a disease like scarring of the liver (e.g. cirrhosis), and monitor specific side effects of medications.

There are a few limitations to liver health testing:

  1. People with Celiac Disease may have elevated aminotransferase (AST & ALT) levels without liver disease.
  2. People with myopathies (muscle disease) may have increased AST.
  3. People with Gilbert’s Syndrome will have mild elevations in bilirubin.
The general rule of thumb is that the more parameters you test for and the more frequent you test for them, the more accurate a diagnosis can be made by your clinician. However, the more testing that is performed, the higher the probability of getting a false positive. If you’re looking for answers something specific, try narrowing your focus to start.

Early identification of early-stage liver conditions can lead to treatment and prevention of advanced liver disease.
