How to use these strips: what do these 4 parameters tell you?
- Leukocytes: specifically leukocyte-esterase activity, which comes from the presence of white blood cells in your urine. An abnormally high presence of white blood cells in the urine typically indicates inflammation or infection along the urinary tract.
- Nitrites: a positive urine nitrite test typically indicates an infection. Some gram-negative bacteria that commonly cause UTIs (E.coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Citrobacter, Proteus) have enzymes that reduce nitrate in urine to nitrite.
- pH: high pH or alkaline urine (pH 8.5-9) can be associated with UTIs caused by with urease-producing bacteria.
- Blood: blood in the urine, also known as hematuria, can be a result of a UTI that spreads to the bladder or kidneys.
