Use urinary pH strips to consistently measure how acidic or alkaline your urine is. This can be useful for avoiding the precipitation of salts that that result in the formation of kidney stones, as well as facilitating the control of a urinary tract infection (UTI).
Some useful information to know when using urinary pH strips:
- Try to measure your urine or saliva pH under the same conditions (time of day, before/after meals) everyday to avoid any inconsistent and misleading results
- Urine in the morning is typically more acidic (lower pH)
- Acidic urine (pH 4.5-6.9) is typically associated with, but not limited to: starvation, severe diarrhea, chronic lung disease, UTIs with acid-producing bacteria (i.e. E.coli), high protein diets, ingestion of cranberries, or certain medications
- Urine after meals is typically more alkaline (higher pH)
- Alkaline urine (pH 7.0-7.9) is typically associated with, but not limited to: vomiting, hyperventilation, UTIs with urease-producing bacteria, vegetarian or low-carb diets, and certain medications.
- pHs above 8.0 should be suspected of improper storage conditions
